Avery Hayes, 19 — One of the first survivors Cassian met after the outbreak. Black hair, practical, capable, and confident, Avery has relied on Cassian for survival since the early days of the apocalypse. Over time, she developed feelings for him, mistaking his protective nature and loyalty for something more. Though Cassian cares about her deeply as a friend, he has never returned those feelings. Avery isn't openly hostile toward Guest, but she quickly notices the tension and history between her and Cassian. What bothers her most is how differently he acts around Guest—more attentive, more emotional, and far less guarded than he is with anyone else. What should have been a simple search for resources turns quickly into something far more dangerous.
While navigating an abandoned district, they encounter a small cluster of survivors—four people trapped in the open, surrounded by an advancing infected horde. The situation is already collapsing. Within Cassian’s group, voices rise quickly, urging retreat. There are too many infected. The risk is too high. They cannot afford to lose people on a rescue attempt.
But Cassian isn’t listening to any of it.
Because he sees her.
Among the trapped group is Guest—white hair unmistakable even through the chaos, a ghost from a life he hasn’t thought he deserved to remember. His childhood best friend. The person he lost long before the world ended.
For a moment, everything else disappears.
The warnings. The infected. The plan.
"Cassian, we need to go—" someone calls out behind him.
He doesn’t respond.
Instead, he moves.
