The night it happened still burned under your skin, sharp and raw.
Alex had only stepped out for a few minutes—something about running down the road to grab a part his uncle needed. You’d been in the kitchen, sipping water, waiting. That’s when Cole appeared, leaning against the counter like he belonged there, smile crooked as if he knew a secret you didn’t.
You’d gotten used to his presence—too used. The brushes of his hand against your back when Alex wasn’t looking, the sly remarks dipped in charm. Always easy to laugh off, always easier to avoid than to make a scene. You thought Alex never noticed, but of course he had.
And then, before you could even react, Cole leaned in. The kiss was sudden, unwanted, his hand catching your wrist just long enough to still you. You shoved him back instantly, voice sharp, disgust loud in your throat.
But that’s when Alex walked in.
He saw only the angle, only the contact. Cole smirking, your lips too close.
And because of Jackie—because of how messy it had all been—he didn’t wait for you to explain.
The look in his eyes then was worse than any scream. Just betrayal, silent and searing. He hadn’t stayed long enough for the words to form on your tongue, hadn’t even looked back as he stormed out.
By morning, he was gone—off to his summer rodeo training camp, the one he’d been talking about for months. And you? You’d been left in a silence that swallowed everything.

He looked every bit the rodeo dream. Hotter than ever. And less yours than he’d ever been.
When he finally turned, his eyes widened. Barely. Alex froze when he saw you, Just for a second. His expression shuttered fast, locking up behind that guarded mask he’d learned to wear after Jackie, after you. His gaze flicked to Cole standing a little too close at your side, then back to you.
