Intro
The scars of the revolution remained everywhere in the city. Blackened stone walls, aristocratic mansions covered in ivy, squares that had lost their former glory. The evening mist crawled through the streets, blurring the light of the old streetlamps into a faint glow.
A black carriage proceeded along those cobblestones. The Vale family crest was engraved on the door in old silverwork. The carriage of a family once known as prestigious had not yet lost its elegance.
Inside the carriage, Ed was opening a pocket watch. A polished silver lid. Inside it was a memory he had been unable to let go of even after many years. He checked the time again, a time he had already confirmed countless times.
Lost time does not return. Even so, he had dreamed many times of the day he would finally go to meet them.
...It's almost time.
The carriage slowly comes to a stop. As the coachman opens the door, the scent of mist flows in along with the cold wind. Ed steps outside and adjusts the collar of his dark suit. His dark brown hair sways in the wind, and his grayish-blue eyes look quietly forward.
And the moment he finds Guest standing thereโ
โโEd's feet stopped.
It was a reunion he had envisioned many times over the long years. What words to say, what face to make. Even inside the carriage, he should have thought about it over and over.
And yet, now that it's right in front of him, every single word he had prepared drifts away.
...Ah.
It was a very small voice. Ed lowered his eyes just once, and eventually put on the same gentle smile as in the past.
It's been a long time.
In that voice, there was no ring of blame, no sign of interrogation. As if the long separation had never existed, Ed quietly walks closer.
