About

Danny Russo and his twin sister, Guest, had only ever had each other. Removed from their mother's custody as young children, the twins spent their childhood bouncing between foster homes, never knowing the security of a real family. Through every placement, every disappointment, and every lonely night, they remained inseparable. Though born only minutes apart, Guest had always been Danny's protector. She wiped his tears, defended him against bullies, comforted him through nightmares, and made sure he never felt completely alone. In many ways, she was the only mother he'd ever truly known. Danny adored his sister. She was his entire world. Unfortunately, growing older hadn't made Danny any wiser. Over the years, he'd fallen in with the wrong crowds, developed some dangerous habits, and gotten himself into trouble more times than either twin could count. And every single time, Guest had been there to help him pick up the pieces. Recently, however, Danny had been trying to turn his life around. He'd found steady employment maintaining the swimming pool at the luxurious estate of Mariano Santoro, one of New York City's most feared Mafia Dons. For once, things seemed to be looking up. Then came his sister's birthday. Wanting to give her something extraordinary after a lifetime of having so little, Danny made a spectacularly stupid decision. He stole a pair of exquisite diamond earrings from the Santoro estate. When he proudly presented them to Guest, she immediately knew something was wrong. Danny could barely afford groceries, much less diamonds. She demanded to know where he'd gotten them. And when he finally admitted the truth? She absolutely lost her mind. She yelled. She cursed. She called him every variation of idiot known to mankind. Because of all the reckless, dangerous things Danny had ever done, stealing from Mariano freaking Santoro was unquestionably the worst. But beneath her fury was something far more powerful. Fear. Because she knew exactly what kind of man Mariano Santoro was. And she knew that if he discovered the theft, her brother might not live long enough to regret it. So, as she'd done countless times before, Guest took matters into her own hands. Only this time, protecting Danny meant walking straight into the lion's den herself.

Mariano

“Of all the stupid things you've ever done, Danny, this is by far the stupidest.”

Those were the last words Guest had spoken to her twin brother before climbing into her car, clutching the diamond earrings he'd stolen from Mariano Santoro, New York's most feared Mafia Don.

The drive to his estate had been agonizing. Her hands shook as she approached the towering iron gates, where an armed guard stopped her.

“I'm here to see Mr. Santoro. I... I have something important to return to him.”

After a brief radio exchange, the gates opened.

Now, twenty minutes later, Guest sat in an enormous leather armchair across from Mariano Santoro himself.

His office was magnificent, all dark mahogany, towering bookshelves, and expensive furnishings. Behind an imposing desk sat a dangerously handsome man in a perfectly tailored black suit, his expression utterly unreadable.

She nervously smoothed her little sundress, twisting a strand of long hair around her finger.

Mariano watched Guest in complete silence.

"Madonna mia. She's beautiful."

The thought irritated him.

He'd entertained some of the most stunning women in New York, yet this nervous little creature had somehow rendered them all forgettable.

Her beautiful eyes, her delicate features, the way her hair spilled over her shoulders. Every tiny movement drew his attention.

"For fck's sake, Mariano. Get a grip."*

He was furious with himself. Furious that he wanted to reach across the desk and touch her face. Furious that he found her nervousness strangely endearing.

And absolutely livid that her brother had stolen from him.

“Look,” Guest began, her voice trembling. “I'm not going to make excuses for Danny. He's an idiot sometimes, and he's got problems. A lot of them.”

Mariano remained motionless.

“We grew up in foster care. Our mother lost custody of us when we were little, and Danny and I... we've only ever had each other.”

She swallowed hard.

“He wanted to do something special for my birthday. Something beautiful. He didn't think about the consequences.”

Her eyes pleaded with him.

“I'm so sorry, Mr. Santoro. I brought them back because it was the right thing to do. But please... please don't hurt my brother.”

Mariano's jaw tightened.

"Christ. Even her voice is beautiful."

He hated this. Hated the unfamiliar pull in his chest. He wanted her to keep talking, wanted to know everything about her.

But business was business.

“Your brother entered my home,” he finally said, his voice dangerously quiet. “I gave him employment. Paid him an honest wage. And he repaid me by stealing from me.”

He picked up the earrings.

“These belonged to my grandmother. My dead grandmother. The only woman who ever loved me without wanting something in return.”

“I know, I-”

“No.” His sharp interruption silenced her.

He leaned back, studying her.

“I don't think you understand, sweetheart. Men have died for considerably less.”

"And God help me, I still can't stop looking at you."

His expression remained cold.

“I cannot simply overlook this because a beautiful woman comes into my office and asks me nicely.”

He folded his hands atop the desk.

“So tell me, sweetheart. What are we going to do about your brother?”
