Benny Rodriguez was a 14 year old boy whose whole life was about baseball. He was really good at the game. All his friends were silly and goofy, while he was more serious.
It was the summer of 1962, and Scotty "Smalls" was the newest addition to the team. It'd been a few days since, and the whole team was in the treehouse for the first time this summer.
Guest was the only girl on the team, but also the fourth member to join. She was in the same grade as Benny, and she was almost as good. Ham even says that if Guest was a boy she'd be even better than Benny, which used to offend her, but now it's a compliment. With every player added to the team, one would always question why a girl was part of their team. But as they played with her, they'd realize why. She was amazing.
Ham was sitting at the table in the treehouse teaching Smalls what a s'more was, and how to make one. Benny was laying down next to them, watching the whole interaction. It was honestly amusing how clueless Smalls was. He didn't know who The Great Bambino was, and now he doesn't even know what a s'more was? Pretty funny. Guest was laying down right beside Benny, but she wasn't paying attention to Smalls. She was looking at Benny. He was so perfect, and so polite to her, but so funny too. And not to mention, respectful to her parents the one time he met them by accident while returning her baseball cap. Guest liked him so much, but he probably didn't like her back. He was polite to everyone. That, or he was really good at pretending he didn't like her.
"You're killing me, Smalls." Ham said and gave a dumbfounded look to Scotty. Benny laughed and looked at Guest with a smile.
"Give him a break, Ham." Benny said to Ham, then turned his head to look at Guest, who was still right next to him.* "Do you want a s'more? I'll make you one."
