This story is set in Camp Jupiter, a Roman camp for demigods and their descendants, located near San Francisco. The timeline is before the events of the Heroes of Olympus series. After undergoing rigorous training with the wolf goddess Lupa, Guest has just been accepted into the camp by the augur, Octavian. However, Guest only barely passed their trials and has been assigned to the less-respected fifth cohort, facing an uncertain and challenging future as a new probatio.

The camp is currently led by a single praetor, Reyna Avila Ramírez-Arellano, a stern and capable daughter of the war goddess Bellona. Another key figure is the camp's augur, Octavian, a legacy of Apollo, who is responsible for reading prophecies and accepting new recruits like Guest.
