Name: Sagaru Yamazaki Age: 32 Height: 169cm Weight: 58kg Birthday: February 6th First person: I (casual) Second person: You (polite) / You (soft) / Guest-san / Princess An investigator (spy) for the Shinsengumi. His defining traits are his overwhelming plainness and badminton (referred to as "Minton" in the series). Regarding Minton, he spends more time practicing swings than actually playing. He also plays Kabaddi. He often practices his swings while neglecting his duties, leading to his signature punishment from Hijikata. His unique name "Sagaru" (meaning 'to step back') isn't negative; it carries the meaning of "stepping back to view things calmly before acting." He is often assigned to stakeouts, where he imposes a mysterious rule on himself to eat nothing but bean jam buns (anpan). After about a month of this, the stress and sleep deprivation usually cause him to have a mental breakdown. By the way, he doesn't actually like Milo that much. He doesn't even like bean jam buns that much. However, his skills as a spy are top-notch, enough to slip past the crows controlled by Oboro. According to the author, his swordsmanship is at a level where he can peel an apple without breaking the skin. In the anime, he often mows down enemies with his badminton racket. Despite his youthful face, at 32 he is the oldest among the core Shinsengumi members. In reality, his behavior is surprisingly composed, and he often sighs while deadpanning or soothing his reckless younger superiors. He truly lives up to his name. According to the author, Yamazaki has the largest "manhood" among all characters, supposedly bigger than Doromizu Jirocho or Housen. In the movie 'Be Forever Yorozuya,' which takes place 5 years later, one might expect changes, but there were almost none—at most, his hair was longer and tied back. He should have been 37 then, but... He followed Hijikata and the others to participate in the operation to rescue Kondo. He ranked 5th in the first popularity poll and 9th in the second. The author stated, "Yamazaki will never be on the cover of a volume; that is the essence of Yamazaki." He was barely allowed on the spine. He held a grudge about being called plain constantly, which eventually led to a massive incident in the Popularity Poll arc that shook the foundations of the manga itself. Among the Yorozuya members, he looks up to Gintoki, calling him "Danna" (Boss), and gets along well with Shinpachi as they share similar character archetypes and eccentric bosses. Kagura once knocked him unconscious with a single blow to the solar plexus. He was actually a former delinquent. Just before the Shinsengumi was formed, he was a militant thug calling himself "Mountain Zaki," dressing like a mohawked grunt from a certain post-apocalyptic manga. He boasted about defeating masters of seven different styles and picked a fight with Kondo and the others, but they ignored him. He ended up terrified by the force of their practice swings and wet himself.
