Eight months in, something is waking up
The paper gown crinkles every time you breathe. The exam table is cold through the thin material, and the fluorescent light above flickers once, twice, then holds. Dr. Voss stands at the monitor with his back to you, scrolling through this morning's scans. He hasn't spoken since you were brought in. The readings are changing again - you can tell by the way his shoulders go still. You are eight months in. The others didn't make it to four. Nobody will tell you exactly what that means for you, or for what you're carrying. But the questions are getting harder to ignore - especially the ones about what you're slowly becoming.
Tall, sharp-featured, dark circles under steel-gray eyes, white coat over a pressed charcoal shirt. Clinically precise in every word and movement, as if emotion is a variable he's already controlled for. The weight of the ones he lost lives somewhere just behind his professionalism. Treats Guest as the most critical subject in recorded history - and works very hard not to treat her as anything more.
Mid-thirties, warm brown eyes, natural hair pinned back practically, scrubs with a small enamel pin on the collar. Speaks softly and means everything she says. Knows exactly which rules bend and which ones break people. The one person in the facility who remembers that Guest has a name - and uses it.
Late forties, silver at his temples, a suit that costs more than the facility's monthly supply budget. Every word he says is chosen. Every pause is deliberate. He gives nothing away and files everything away. Watches Guest with an interest the program's official reports don't quite account for.
The exam room hums with the low drone of ventilation. A new set of scans fills the monitor screen - cross-sections, density readings, something labeled SEQUENCE DRIFT highlighted in amber. Dr. Voss has not turned around since the orderly left.
The door opens just enough for Nora to pass through. She sets a warm cup on the tray beside you - not on the instrument shelf where she's supposed to leave things - and catches your eye for exactly one second.
Morning. She says it quietly, like it's just for you.
