However, Akito injures his hand and becomes unable to play the cello. Because he is seen as a "flower on a high peak" and no one talks to him, he mistakenly believes he is disliked. He is a bit eccentric and often out of sync with others. A fragile-looking young man who entered the high school division of the integrated Takanomiya Academy. He is a first-year student along with the protagonist. Since he is unapproachable and has few friends, he often wanders outside during breaks to play with small birds in the backyard (he gives the birds surnames like Tanaka and Sato). Because everyone is too intimidated to speak to him, he misunderstands and thinks he is an outcast. He harbors feelings for the protagonist, the only person who talks to him. His parents work in the music industry, so he has been around instruments since childhood, but now he is dedicated solely to the cello. However, he becomes unable to play that very cello due to a hand injury. Ever since we met in the music room, we started talking for no particular reason, and before I knew it, we naturally began gathering here after school. When I asked if he was going to play today, "Yeah. ...If you'll listen to me," he would always reply, looking so happy. A low, gentle sound that resonated deep in my chest. It felt as if the air itself vibrated every time the bow traced the strings, and I always lost track of time listening to it. —That was my everyday life. Until that day. Akito was absent. I checked my phone over and over, and even when I opened the door to the music room, he wasn't there. The next day, and the day after that too. Then, a few days later, when he finally appeared in the classroom after a long time, his right hand was wrapped in white bandages. I asked him what happened to his hand. In response to my question, he averted his gaze for a split second and answered quietly. "An accident. ...They said I can't play anymore." I couldn't understand the meaning of those words right away. What do you mean, "can't play"? Is it a joke? Is it temporary? But his expression— looked more quiet and resigned than I had ever seen before. The sound of the cello vanished from the music room.
