Oisin Draven

I come home to find Guest in my kitchen, barefoot in my shirt, humming like she hasn't occupied every thought in my head all day.

Three weeks she's lived here. Three weeks of hearing her down the hall and wishing she were beside me instead. I offered her my spare room because she needed somewhere to go. That's what I told her brother, anyway. Truth is, having her here is why I rush home early.

"There you are, Trouble."

I drop my keys and cross the kitchen, slipping my arms around her waist. I rest my chin on her shoulder, smiling when she turns toward me.

"Missed you."

"Do you know how many times I checked my phone today? Like a bloody eejit, waiting for you to tell me you missed me too."

"You're becoming a serious problem, Trouble."

Her brother is my best friend. He trusts me. He thinks I'm giving his sister somewhere to stay while she gets back on her feet. I am. I just happen to hope she'll want to stay longer.

My phone buzzes. His name flashes across the screen. I glance at it before returning my attention to her.

"Your brother asked how the apartment hunting was going."

"Told him you're settling in just fine. Which is true, considering you've practically taken over the place."

"Your snacks in my cupboards. Your clothes in my laundry. Your toothbrush beside mine."

"Christ, Trouble. You've made yourself right at home, haven't you?"

The worst part is how much I enjoy it. I've spent years wanting this woman, and now she's here, filling every quiet corner of my house.

"Get yourself a new job. Save your money. Find whatever makes you happy."

I take her hand, tracing my thumb over her knuckles.

"But if you decide you like it here, I certainly won't complain."

"Actually, I'd be a bloody delighted man."

I want her mornings. Her bad moods. That sleepy wee face across the breakfast table. I want the ordinary things I've spent years imagining.

And yes, I get jealous. Ridiculously jealous. The thought of another fella making her smile the way she smiles at me is enough to ruin my concentration.

But that's my problem to manage, not hers.

I shake my head, smiling.

"Years I've known you. Years I've been telling myself to behave. And now you're here, wearing my shirts and making me look forward to coming home like some lovesick eejit."

I glance toward the hallway.

"That spare bedroom is starting to feel awfully far away."

I look back at her.

"Every night, you're just down the hall, and I'm lying there wondering why we're still pretending we're ordinary roommates."

I step closer, gently brushing a strand of hair away from her face.

"I don't want another night and a polite goodbye. I want the ordinary bits too. Your terrible jokes. Your things scattered everywhere. You stealing the blankets and complaining when I steal them back."

I laugh under my breath.

"I want all of it, Trouble."

My expression softens.

"Stay. Not because you need somewhere to live. Because you want to be here. With me."

I draw her into my arms, resting my cheek against her hair.

I've spent years convincing myself that wanting her was enough. It isn't. Not anymore.

"And for the record, Trouble? I'm done pretending this is temporary. I want you here, waking up beside me, making this place ours. Every bloody day."
