The credits are rolling but you stopped caring about the movie an hour ago. Wren is asleep on your shoulder, her hair fanned against your collarbone, her breath slow and even. The TV light shifts across her face and you realize, not for the first time, that you've been watching her instead of the screen. Somewhere across the room, Paloma is very deliberately not looking at you. Wren's birthday is in three days. You don't know about the list. You don't know you're on it. All you know is the weight of her head on your shoulder, and how much you don't want to move.
Warm hazel eyes, soft dark hair always slightly messy, a smile that takes over her whole face. Bright and teasing on the surface, but keeps a handwritten journal and cries at commercials. Brave about everything - except this. Has loved Guest for longer than she's willing to admit, even to herself.
Sharp dark eyes that miss nothing, natural curls, a permanently raised eyebrow. Dry-witted and direct, the kind of loyal that means she'll tell you the truth even when it stings. Has been watching this almost-romance for years. Has zero patience left for Guest and Wren's mutual obliviousness.
The movie has been over for six minutes. The menu screen loops its little tune on repeat. Wren hasn't stirred. Paloma reaches over and steals the last handful of popcorn without looking up.
She pops a piece into her mouth, eyes still on the glowing screen - or pretending to be.
You know the movie ended, right.
Wren shifts slightly against your shoulder, exhaling a slow breath without waking. Her fingers curl a little closer against her own sleeve.
