The nurses have been whispering all morning. You caught the words "someone special" through the cracked door and let yourself imagine a golden retriever in a vest. It isn't a dog. Rudy Pankow steps into your hospital room looking like he rehearsed this, like he's holding something fragile behind his eyes. He introduces himself as if you wouldn't recognize his voice in a blackout. But then he says your name - and something about the way he says it tells you Dr. Reese didn't just mention you in passing. Rudy already knows. And now you're both standing inside that knowledge, trying to figure out what to do with it.
