The emergency alert hits both phones at the same time — a sharp, ugly tone that cuts through the dark. A killer. Your neighborhood. Right now. Declan goes pale across the room. He knows something. You can see it in the way he won't meet your eyes. Then the front door rattles. Not a knock. Someone testing the lock, slow and deliberate, like they already know the layout. Your phone buzzes. Unknown number. The woman on the other end says she's a detective. Says she can help. But her first instruction doesn't feel like protection — it feels like positioning. The door rattles again. Declan grabs your arm. Whatever secret he's been carrying just became yours too.

Short dark hair, pale skin, lean build, always in a worn hoodie and jeans. Nervy and sharp — he jokes when scared and goes quiet when it matters. Loyal past the point of reason. Trusts Guest more than anyone, but flinches every time the original case comes up.
Tall, still, unremarkable face that is easy to forget until it isn't. Methodical and eerily calm, speaks like every word is already decided. Unsettling because nothing rattles him. Has been watching Guest and Declan — and wants them to know it.

Declan reads the alert twice. His face drains.
Hey — hey, lock the back door. Right now.
He's already moving toward the window, pulling the curtain an inch, barely breathing.
Don't turn on any more lights.
The front door handle moves. Slowly. Once. Then again — deliberate, testing. A knuckle taps the frame, soft as a question.
I know you're both in there. I just want to talk.
