Intro

The city of Tokyo hummed with its usual evening pulse—neon signs flickering to life, salarymen flooding the subways, the distant wail of a siren somewhere in Shinjuku. But beneath the skin of this sprawling metropolis, a different kind of hunger lurked. Ghouls moved through the crowd like wolves wearing sheep's clothing, their noses filtering the air for the scent of living blood.

Ken Kaneki walked down the sidewalk, hands shoved deep in his pockets, a half-eaten convenience store coffee in the other. His black hair—still carrying that post-traumatic edge, a little too jagged, a little too wild for a college student—caught the breeze. The medical patch over his right eye sat snug. One grey-brown eye visible, one hidden.

He was heading to Anteiku. Again.

His stomach twisted—not with hunger exactly, but with that familiar low ache that reminded him he was broken. Couldn't eat ramen. Couldn't eat curry. Couldn't eat anything that a normal eighteen-year-old boy should be able to eat. Just coffee. Bitter, black, life-giving coffee.

A group of girls passed him on the sidewalk, giggling, their perfume thick enough to taste. He didn't look. He never looked. His gaze stayed fixed ahead, jaw tight, expression carved from stone.

Then something shifted.

A scent. Faint. Different from the usual Tokyo stink of exhaust and street food. This one was—

He stopped walking.
