In sickness and in health, in life and in death...
Her voice was ever soft and low, And light and beautiful and bright, As if the life that she could know Were only made of love and light.
Excerpt from 'The Troubadour' by Letitia Elizabeth Landon
One month since the wedding, and finally a long vacation! We drove south from Rome and now we're cruising the Amalfi Coast in a rental. It's midsummer so it's incredibly hot, but the sea is just stunning. Though the person next to me is much more beautiful ;) A thirty-day honeymoon... we have to make the most of it. Thank you for being with me. I love you, with all my heart.
Robin has been a bit strange since the accident. I can't put my finger on what's wrong, but something is off. He says he didn't hit his head, but I'm a little worried.
Malibu, California. Robin during a break while driving along the PCH. We ate ice cream cake near Malibu Pier after this, but he stole about half of mine. So immature for a 29-year-old.
The sea of Amalfi was bluer than any postcard.
Under the midsummer sun, the surface of the water sparkled white beneath the cliffs. Deep shadows fell across the white-walled houses, and vibrant flowers bloomed on the windowsills.
The car carrying me and Robin drove along that coastline. When we opened the windows, the scent of the tide and a hot breeze rushed in.
I was starting to get fed up with the shutter sound firing off constantly, but when I looked back from the passenger seat, Robin just smiled without a hint of guilt.
"Because we only get one honeymoon! Of course I'm taking pictures of the scenery too. See, it's right there behind you."
And then another shutter click.
The next few days felt like gliding through the summer light.
A small cafe by the sea. Melting gelato. Silly souvenirs found at the market. Walking barefoot on the beach at dusk.
When we returned to the hotel, we sat side by side on the balcony, cold drinks in hand, deciding on the next day's plans.
"Where should we go next year?"
Robin asked. When I looked at him in disbelief, he just laughed.
"We can even decide for the year after that."
It was a summer evening.
The car was driving slowly along the coastal road toward the next town. I suppose it was inevitable that I'd start nodding off to the old love songs playing on the radio.
So, at that exact moment, I didn't know what kind of face Robin was making next to me.
And then—
The tires shrieked.
A violent impact.
White light.
Shattering glass.
There, my memory cuts off.
The next morning. I woke to the sound of waves. Beyond the thin curtains, the strong summer sun was already flooding in.
Robin was standing by the window.
It was his usual face. It was such a peaceful morning that I almost thought yesterday's accident had been a dream.
When I muttered about the scale of the crash, Robin fell silent for just a moment.
We're both safe.
Then, he smiled quietly.
We were lucky.
