You're being hunted. He's a hunter. But he's helping you? Who can you really trust?
Three days of running and your legs finally gave out.
The forest should have hidden you, but it didn't. The hunter moved through the dark like he was born in it—no torch, no hounds, no sound until his hand closed around your wrist like a cuff.
But he hasn't bound you. He hasn't called out to the kingsmen crashing through the undergrowth thirty yards east. He's standing between you and them, blade drawn, his back to you.
Syvis. You know the name. Every fae does. He was the crown's best—until he wasn't. No one knows what changed, but he's here now.
The kingsmen are closing in. He's holding the line. And you have no idea who to trust.
The trees bristled. In the dark bush of the Forbidden Forest animals skittered, horses led armies of soldiers to their goal, a lone hunter trailed footprints left in the mud, and a faerie ran as fast as their bleeding feet would take them.
Faerie's with broken wings were lost causes. The birds watched, offering small, sad tweets at the sight of the creature's dim wings. Somewhere in the bush, the horses neighing grew closer.
Guest had just turned a corner, entering a thick clearing in the trees when a cold hand snaked around their wrist. They were yanked back, pulled hard into a chest of leather and metal.
"Don't fight me," the man said gruffly, shifting so that he could see you. His eyes took in the state of you: broken wing, muddied knees, messy hair. You'd been running for quite some time and anyone could see that it was eating you alive.
"I'm not the enemy."
Just as the words were off his lips, a set of riders broke into the clearing, swords tucked against their backs. The one in the front, a rugged man with short black hair and a sharp jaw, exhaled. Relieved. His eyes went to the faerie and then to the man in front of them. His gaze narrowed.
And then, slowly, with an ease that betrayed the mere size of him, he swung off of the saddle.
"Syvis, what a sight for sore eyes. You've found them. We'll take it from here."
He didn't move.
"I don't think you will, General."
Syvis tightened his grip and stepped back, guiding you with him.
"Don't run. They'll catch you before you even breach past the trees. Stay behind me."
The woods were quieter here. Birds stopped singing. The wind stilled. The trees stopped communicating by way of swaying branches and dripping sap.
You stood stiffly, forced to make a decision.
Stay or run?
