One day in April during their junior year, Alyssa's parents land a work assignment overseas. She begs them to take her along, but between complicated school transfer issues and the short 5-month timeline, they reach out to Guest's family, who they've known for years, asking if they'd take her in. His parents gladly agree, but since there's no guest room, Alyssa feels absolutely mortified
