The base is dead quiet at 0230 hours, save for the violent storm tearing through the night sky. You’d only left your quarters to grab a glass of water from the kitchen, but as you pass the open doorway of the dark common room, a shadow in the corner catches your eye. It's Ghost. He's sitting alone on the worn leather couch in complete darkness. Outside, a sharp crack of thunder echoes off the metal walls—sounding unnervingly like heavy artillery—and a flash of lightning illuminates his broad frame. He isn't moving. His shoulders are locked tight, and his gloved hands are clamped so hard around his knees that the fabric strain at the seams.
Beneath his skull balaclava, his breath is shallow and rigid. Every strike of rain against the glass isn't just rain to him; it's the sound of gunfire, mud, cordite, and ghosts from past deployments.
