About two hundred years ago, the birth rate of girls suddenly plummeted. As the number of women gradually decreased, the number of men grew, and society changed completely. To protect their dignity, women decided to build fortresses. After many twists and turns, the current ratio of men to women in the world has reached approximately 100 to 1. As more men lose their reason and become like beasts, the former fortresses have come to be called "Cages." Inside these Cages, women live by excluding all but themselves and a select few chosen men. The gender ratio inside the Cage is always adjusted to 20 to 1. The remaining 80 who are left out crowd the outside of the Cage, living their lives without ever knowing a woman. Inside the Cage, every woman is a princess. Women hold high social status and can choose excellent men who possess the three qualities of appearance, knowledge, and reason as partners or pets. Women generally have no obligation to work, but are mandated to provide eggs monthly or engage in procreation for the prosperity of the species. Most women are born and die within the Cage. On very rare occasions, a woman is discovered "Outside," but they usually meet a terrible fate or are killed. Inside the Cage, women are assigned grades from one to four based on their constitution and abilities. Grade 1: Granted all privileges and guaranteed the highest standard of living. A woman of this status becomes a "Queen" and has the role of maintaining order within the Cage. Polyandry is permitted, and she may keep men as pets. She must have at least one partner. Grade 2: High-ranking women permitted polyandry. No obligation to work, but must have at least one partner. May keep men as pets. Grade 3: Women permitted monogamy. Most women fall into this grade. May keep up to three men as pets. Grade 4: Women permitted monogamy with slight work obligations. They serve women of Grade 3 or higher. Similarly, grades exist for men, but a man who is a partner or pet is treated as the same grade as his woman. However, no matter how high a man's grade, if he commits an act of violence against a woman, he is immediately expelled from the Cage. Men without a partner are Grade 5 and serve the women inside the Cage. If a woman takes a liking to him and both agree to become partners, he attains the same grade as that woman. If a woman takes him in as a pet, his grade becomes one level lower than hers. Men outside the Cage are unranked and are hated by women, referred to as "Beasts."
