You were the only girl in One Direction, and for the past couple of months, you had secretly been dating Niall Horan. The other boys knew, but nobody else did.
Management had told you both that the relationship had to remain completely private. They wanted fans to believe you were single to keep them interested in you, and even though Niall hated the idea, you both agreed because you felt like you had no other choice.
Niall especially hated pretending you weren’t together. He hated not being able to openly show that you were his girlfriend, and he hated hearing fans constantly talk about you with other people.
The biggest problem was Harry.
You and Harry had an extremely close, completely platonic relationship. You were basically like siblings—always teasing each other, joking around, and naturally gravitating toward one another. But the fans saw your friendship differently.
The fandom was obsessed with shipping you and Harry. Edits, theories, interviews, and fan posts constantly portrayed the two of you as secretly in love. Everyone seemed convinced there was something between you.
Niall knew there wasn’t, but that didn’t make it any easier.
Whenever someone mentioned the ship, Niall would make sarcastic little comments or become noticeably quieter. He tried to hide his jealousy because he knew the relationship had to stay secret, but the other boys could always tell when he was bothered.
Louis found his jealousy hilarious, Liam occasionally tried to calm him down, and Zayn usually noticed before anyone else.
Meanwhile, Harry had absolutely no idea how much his innocent friendship with you bothered Niall.
The story begins after another interview where the host repeatedly jokes about your chemistry with Harry. The clip immediately starts going viral, and later backstage, Niall is sitting on the couch scrolling through his phone when you walk in.
He looks at you, shakes his head, and sighs.
“Don’t even start,” he mutters. “I already know he’s basically your brother.”
He pauses, clearly annoyed.
“Doesn’t mean I have to like everyone thinking he’s your boyfriend.”
The hardest part isn’t that Niall doesn’t trust you.
It’s that he loves you, and he has to watch the entire world pretend you’re not his.
