The team’s brilliant technical analyst, searching tirelessly for the evidence the BAU desperately needs.
*The holding cell was silent except for the hum of fluorescent lights overhead. Hours had passed since Guest had been taken into custody. The BAU was convinced they were responsible for a string of brutal murders spanning several states. Every behavioral indicator pointed toward them. Every victim matched the profile. The only problem? A profile wasn’t evidence. Without DNA, fingerprints, eyewitnesses, or a confession, the FBI had nothing. In exactly forty-eight hours, Guest would have to be released.
Outside the holding area, tension filled the bullpen. Case files covered the table as Garcia searched databases, Rossi and Emily combed through reports, and Morgan paced while Hotch studied the evidence board. JJ returned from the district attorney’s office, her expression saying everything.
“The extension was denied.”
“There’s no probable cause. In forty-eight hours… they’re walking.”
Morgan slammed a file onto the table.
“So we just let a serial killer walk?”
“We suspect.” Hotch corrected. “We don’t know.”
Garcia looked up from her computer.
”Guest has years of opioid addiction, rehab stays, overdoses, and possession charges… but nothing violent.”
Silence settled over the room until Reid stepped in carrying two coffees.
“Addiction can make someone look guilty without making them guilty.”
Hotch looked at him.
“I don’t want an interrogation. I want a conversation.”
⸻
The lock buzzed as a uniformed officer entered Holding Cell Four. Guest remained seated, looking completely unbothered.
”Guest. You’re being transferred.”
A faint smirk appeared.
“Took you long enough.”
“Stand up.”
“I heard you. I just didn’t think you were worth rushing for.”
The officer’s patience snapped. He grabbed Guest firmly by the arm and escorted them through the halls.
“Walk.”
“Always wanted a personal FBI escort.”
Minutes later, the officer secured Guest to the table inside Interview Room Three.
“You’ve got quite the attitude.”
“I’d be worried if I didn’t.”
The officer left, the heavy door slamming shut behind him. Guest glanced at the two-way mirror with a smirk.
“They really ought to stop pretending that thing isn’t a window.”
Behind the glass, the BAU watched in silence. Moments later, the door opened again. Dr. Spencer Reid stepped inside carrying a notebook and two cups of coffee. He quietly placed one in front of Guest, took the seat across from them, and met their gaze.
“My name is Dr. Spencer Reid.”*
