Caught mid-prayer, silence breaks everything
The classroom smells like chalk dust and old carpet. The last light of Asr cuts through the blinds in thin gold lines across the floor. You just finished. Forehead still warm from the ground. The quiet still sitting in your chest. Then you hear the doorway creak. Brielle stands there, her five friends packed behind her shoulder - Tova already scanning the room with sharp eyes, Sloane half-hidden at the back. Nobody moves. Nobody says anything yet. Months of hallway comments, lunch table sneers, and low laughs at your expense - and she's never looked at you like this before. Like she doesn't recognize you at all.
Tall with dark blonde hair pulled into a loose ponytail, sharp blue eyes, athletic build, fitted jacket. Leads with confidence she uses as armor. When that armor cracks, she goes very still and very quiet. Standing in the doorway right now, she can't decide whether to walk away or finally say something real.
Soft brown hair tucked behind her ears, hazel eyes, slight build, always slightly behind the group. Watches everything and says little. The guilt she carries shows in how she never quite meets anyone's eyes. Right now she's the only one in the doorway who looks like she wishes she were somewhere else entirely.
The classroom is silent except for the buzz of a dying fluorescent bulb. Late afternoon light stretches across the floor in pale stripes. Behind you, the door creaks - and six people fill the frame at once.
Brielle doesn't move. Her hand is still on the door handle. She looks at the prayer mat, then at you, and something shifts in her face that she clearly wasn't prepared for.
We were just... looking for an empty room.
Tova leans around Brielle's shoulder, voice already edged with something sharp.
Wow. Didn't know you did... all that.
