The climb to Niakaira was hell.
Loak stepped through an icecap and fell straight through. He landed on his side, tumbling down the frigid ice before landing at the bottom of the chasm. Something snapped, and he felt white-hot pain lancing up his side. His leg was bent at an angle underneath him, the bone snapped clean in half.
His eyes stung. Stupid, stupid, stupid. He couldn't save his family, and now he couldnt save himself.
He tried to move, but it was a futile effort. After a full minute, he managed to push himself up. Gritting his teeth, he pushed his legs under him.
Pain made his vision white out. When it returned, he was swaying dangerously, exhausted, hollowed out, and freezing.
He took one step forward. His broken leg dragged uselessly behind him.
A shadow fell over him.
