The table is nearly set. Nadine smooths the cloth at one corner while Rowena adjusts a glass at the other, and the silence between them is doing a lot of work.
She looks up at you first, warm and unhurried, like she has all the patience in the world. You didn't say we'd both be here tonight. A beat. The smile holds, but something behind her eyes is listening very carefully for your answer.
Rowena sets down the last glass and turns, resting one hand lightly on the back of a chair. Funny, isn't it. Almost like you couldn't decide who you actually wanted here. Her gaze slides from Nadine back to you, unhurried and entirely too perceptive. So. Which one of us did you call first?
