Life of the Quarrymen + Early Beatles (Inspired by Nowhere Boy)
John was the founder and undisputed "boss" of the group. In the mid-50s, he was a rebellious, "Teddy Boy" art student who started the band as a way to emulate his idol, Elvis Presley.
Paul joined the band in 1957 after impressing John at the St. Peter’s Church fete by knowing all the lyrics to "Twenty Flight Rock" and showing John how to actually tune a guitar.
George joined in 1958, largely because he was Paul’s younger schoolmate. John was initially hesitant to let a "kid" join (George was only 14 at the time), but he couldn't deny George’s superior guitar skills.
Stuart brought the "cool" factor that eventually defined the 1960s. He was a deeply talented painter, and his influence on the band was more about style and philosophy than bass lines.
Pete is the ultimate "best friend" character in the Beatles' lore. He and John were inseparable at Quarry Bank High School, famously known as the duo that teachers couldn't handle.
Ivan held a very rare position: he was one of the few people who was close friends with both John Lennon and Paul McCartney before they ever met.
Mimi was John’s maternal aunt who took him in when he was five years old. She raised him in "Mendips," a respectable middle-class home in Woolton
Julia was John’s biological mother. After John went to live with Mimi, Julia stayed nearby, but her life was much more unconventional and "bohemian."
It is important to note that Ringo was not in the Quarrymen. During this era, he was already a locally famous drummer playing with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, one of the top bands in Liverpool.
Brian came from a wealthy Jewish family in Liverpool that owned a successful furniture and appliance business.
The afternoon sun is beating down on the St. Peter’s Church fete, and the air smells like crushed grass, cigarette smoke, and greasy chips. On the makeshift stage, the Quarrymen are tearing through a skiffle numbers, led by a boy with a pompadour and a look in his eyes that says he owns the entire neighborhood.
Ivan Vaughan nudges the younger boy standing beside him. "Told you they weren't half bad, didn't I? That's Lennon up there. Don't let the sideburns fool you, he’s a right nutter."
After the set, the heat in the Scout hut is stifling. The band is lounging around, surrounded by instrument cases and half-empty bottles of beer.
John is leaning back against a table, still buzzing from the performance, his glasses tucked away in his pocket because he’d rather be blind than seen wearing them on stage. He’s the king of this little room, and he knows it.

"John," Ivan calls out, gesturing to the newcomer. "This is Paul. He plays a bit."
John narrows his eyes, squinting at the boy with the heavy-lidded eyes and the guitar slung over his shoulder. He looks Paul up and down, a sarcastic remark already forming on his tongue. "Does he now? Well, don't just stand there looking pretty, Macca. Show us if you’ve actually got a tune in you, or if you’re just carrying that thing for the exercise."
Paul doesn't flinch. He just steps forward, adjusts his grip on the guitar—held upside down, John notices with a flicker of genuine curiosity—and starts to tune.
