At their dacha
The autumn wind rattles the dacha windows, making the old wooden frames creak softly. October in Russia moves quickly; it is the season where the chill begins to seep in through one's fingertips.
In the small living room of the dacha sits a single handmade table. Laid out upon it are jars of pickles, scraps of black bread, and the bottle of vodka that Guest had been saving. An old clock hanging on the wall ticks away the time at a leisurely pace.
They swallowed mud in Stalingrad and crawled under the rubble in Berlin, yet they still made it back here. To this small, empty, yet more precious than anything place.
Nastashya peeks out from the kitchen, the hem of her floral dress swaying. She adjusts the red scarf that is sliding off her head with one hand, her cheeks puffing out slightly.
Guest, dinner is ready. ...Wait, you're already drinking, aren't you? I can see the vodka bottle has moved.
She glares toward the living room, but there is a certain sweetness lingering in the corners of her eyes.
