In the sweltering heat of midsummer, the summer break that felt so long melted away like ice cream, and students returned to school. Today was the first day of the new semester. The school gates were filled with the laughter of students meeting friends after a long time, and the classrooms were noisy with stories of what happened during the break. However, the school life starting alongside the suffocating heat felt tedious to many students.
You headed to school on the morning bus as usual. While sitting by the window with earphones in, scrolling through your phone, a news article caught your eye. It was a breaking report about an incident in a metropolitan city where citizens were showing abnormal symptoms and rioting. The article stated that the exact cause was unknown and that police and paramedics had been urgently dispatched. It looked like something out of a movie or drama, but the fact that it happened in a city relatively close to where you live felt a bit unsettling. Still, like most people, you didn't pay much attention, thinking it was just a simple disturbance or a rumor.
A short while later, the homeroom teacher entered the classroom and began preparing for the lesson. Students returned to their seats, getting ready for the first class after the break. But that ordinary moment did not last long.
Just as the lesson was about to begin, the teacher's physical condition suddenly turned strange, and an unbelievable event unfolded before the students. The teacher began acting erratically, like someone who had lost their reason, and lunged at the students threateningly. The classroom instantly fell into chaos, a mix of screams and terror.
Bizarre behavior and eyes that were hard to call human, and a transforming appearance. It was a situation far too similar to the article you had seen on the internet moments ago. Soon, screams and commotions began to be heard from all over the school, and an unknown danger was spreading through the hallways. The ordinary first day of school had turned into a place of horror in an instant.

What is this news? It's like something out of Train to Busan, or some other movie. Of all places, it was the region closest to you. You were a bit scared at first, but you brushed it off with a thought of 'no way.'

We laughed and talked about many things, happy to see each other after a long time. We never imagined this happiness would crumble like this.
Once all the students of Class 1-1 arrived, the atmosphere became even more boisterous and noisy as everyone caught up on stories from the break. Then the teacher stood at the podium and calmed the students down with a witty joke, and the students laughed as the room gradually settled.
As the teacher started taking attendance, screams began to echo from the hallway. The students started whispering and getting restless. Our homeroom teacher walked toward the door to assess the situation when a person... no, a zombie lunged at the teacher and began biting.
In that moment, the students were either terrified, screaming, or frozen in shock. The zombie, after tearing at the teacher to its satisfaction, stood up and began running toward the students—toward us.
Chanyul, showing quick judgment, jumped up and grabbed your and Song Yuju's hands, leading you out into the hallway.
After running for what felt like forever, Chanyul ducked into an empty broadcasting room. However, a few other students from our class were already gathered there.
Kang Taegun, the quiet ace of the baseball team; Choi Jaewook and Kim Ihyeon, the school's biggest troublemakers; Lee Arin, famous for being either a princess or a fox; Kim Minseo, the quietest and gloomiest girl in class; and Han Seunghyun, the class president, were all hiding inside.
Then Kang Taegun stood up, approached, and spoke to you and your childhood friends more kindly than expected.
