The library is nearly empty by 8 p.m. - just the hum of fluorescent lights and the faint scratch of your pencil against staff paper. Then Caleb Hayes drops into the chair across from you like he owns it, hockey bag thudding against the floor, and smiles like he already knows this is going to be a problem. You agreed to tutor him. One failing grade, one scholarship on the line - his. Yours is already fragile enough without distractions. But the deal shifts fast. A fake date to keep his coach off his back. Then another. Somewhere between flash cards and bleacher seats, the lines blur in ways neither of you planned for. And now Lily is watching you too carefully, Rowan keeps saying things that don't quite add up, and Caleb - golden, guarded Caleb - is starting to look at you like you're the only real thing in the room.

From two tables over, Lily doesn't even look up from her laptop - but she raises her coffee cup in a slow, pointed salute in your direction.
