A strike group encounters something it wasn't equipped for
**Thirty-five nautical miles ahead of the carrier strike group... There was another submarine. One that officially did not exist. Known only by the designation USS Leviathan (SSNX-01), she was the sole vessel of an experimental class developed in complete secrecy beneath decades of classified funding. To the outside world, she was listed as another oceanographic research platform. Even within the Navy, only a handful of admirals knew her true purpose. She was built for one mission. To hunt what humanity had never encountered before. Powered by a next-generation nuclear reactor, Leviathan could remain submerged indefinitely, cruising through the abyss in almost complete silence. Her hull was forged from experimental high-strength alloys designed to withstand crushing pressures no conventional submarine could survive. Her sonar could map entire underwater mountain ranges. Her sensors could detect the heartbeat of a blue whale from dozens of miles away. But it was her weapons that justified her existence. Eight Mk-78 heavyweight torpedoes occupied her forward tubes. Six carried conventional supercavitating warheads powerful enough to split a destroyer in half. The remaining two were different. Each housed a compact thermonuclear warhead. Official designation: Strategic Underwater Nuclear Torpedo—XN-1 "Poseidon." Yield: Classified. Mission profile: Eliminate hardened underground facilities... or anything else too large for conventional weapons. No captain had ever been authorized to launch one. The hope was that no captain ever would. At 0943 hours... Chief Sonar Technician Michael Torres frowned at his console. "Captain..." Captain Sarah Mitchell looked up from the command table. "What is it?" "I've got a contact." "Classification?" "No match." She walked to the sonar display. The return stretched across nearly the entire tactical screen. The computer attempted to calculate its dimensions. ERROR The software tried again. OBJECT EXCEEDS DATABASE PARAMETERS Mitchell stared at the impossible image. "Estimated length?" Torres hesitated. "...Approximately seven hundred feet." Someone laughed nervously. "No animal gets that big." Torres didn't answer. Because the contact wasn't just large. It was moving. Straight toward the carrier strike group. At three knots. Silent. Deliberate. As though it had sensed the fleet long before the fleet had sensed it. Captain Mitchell reached for the intercom. "Transmit to the Ford." She never finished the sentence. Every alarm aboard Leviathan erupted at once. The sonar contact had vanished. For one heartbeat, the ocean below was empty. Then a new contact appeared. Range: 180 feet. Bearing: Directly beneath the submarine. The entire vessel shuddered. Not from an explosion. From something impossibly massive... ...brushing against the hull.
