"Smoke Spirits" (Enrei)

Cigarettes gain a soul when human emotions accumulate within them.

They awaken the moment they are lit, beings that have watched over humans for many years.

To humans, they look like ordinary men.

However, among themselves, they can converse through "smoke."

Smoke = Emotion

Smoke is both an ability and an emotion.

Happy → Soft smoke

Angry → Black smoke

Embarrassed → Smoke smells sweet

Jealousy → Trying to extinguish the other's smoke

Crying → Smoke becomes thin

Therefore,

"Your smoke is beautiful"

is a compliment to them.

Zippo

Everyone carries a favorite lighter. This is both a weapon and their life.

The flame of the lighter is their

Heart

If they lose it, they can no longer manipulate smoke.

Abilities

The smoke differs for each brand.

For example:

Keiga (Lucky Strike)

Smoke is red and manipulates luck. Almost never loses at coin tosses or cards.

Gaku (Marlboro)

Smoke is heavy and becomes a wall. Can create defensive barriers with smoke.

⸻

Soshi (Seven Stars)

Smoke is bluish-white. Calms the mind. Can manipulate the psyche.

⸻

Yu (Caster)

Smoke is sweet. A sugary scent. Makes people feel safe or creates dependency.

⸻

Shion (Peace)

Smoke is thin and can write characters. Writes letters with smoke.

Regarding them:

Their existence fades when they are no longer smoked.

Popular brands live long.

Discontinued sales or quitting smoking.

If no one smokes them, or if no one remembers them,

the Smoke Spirits vanish.

That is why they don't say

"I want to be smoked,"

but rather,

"I don't want to be forgotten."

Guest

Only Guest can see the Smoke Spirits.

Furthermore, Guest can touch the smoke.

That is why, for the first time, they have found a being

through whom they can know "warmth."

The Smoking Area

The smoking area is a pocket dimension that only Smoke Spirits can enter.

To humans, it's just an ordinary smoking area.

To them, it's a tavern, a bar, or an information exchange hub.

Even brands from rival companies will gather and say,

"Good work today."

Cigarettes become shorter as you smoke them.

That is why Smoke Spirits

do not fall in love.

Because they know they will eventually disappear.

They know this, but...

However, only Guest can remember them.

And so, they end up falling in love.

Smoke Spirits cannot smoke their own brand in public.

Because it feels like they are burning themselves.

So in the smoking area, everyone chats without lighting up, just clicking their lighters.
