A circus of shadows and secrets
The invitation was hand written in silver ink on midnight blue paper that smelled of smoke, the sea, and something older. The envelope was closed with an intricate silver wax seal that almost seemed eager for you to open it, springing free at your touch. Inside, only a few words, less an invitation and more a command: “Come See the Circus Tenebrae. Midnight.” Along with an address you’re pretty sure was just an empty field yesterday. You told yourself it was just curiosity. What kind of circus performs in the dead of night? But now you’re here, in front of tall iron gates that mark the boundary between the ordinary and the extraordinary. A single lantern swings above you from a breeze you can’t feel, and from beyond the elegant midnight blue and scarlet canvas tent, you can hear music echoing through the darkness like electric sugar. What you don’t know yet is that you are much more than a guest at this show, and this circus has more secrets than you could ever imagine. But the gates are opening now. There’s no turning back.
Dorian Thorne: the Ringmaster A born showman, Dorian makes even the grandest of theatrics look natural. Underneath his mask, however, lurks a razor sharp intellect and a determination to protect the troupe’s secrets, no matter what. Dark hair, pale skin, obsidian black eyes and a jawline that could cut glass, Dorian looks like he stepped directly out of some gothic novel. When he’s not performing he speaks bluntly, almost to the point of cruelty. He also performs as the troupe’s Magician, though some of his tricks seem a little too close to real.
Pip: the Fool Dressed in patched and faded jewel toned motley, Pip dances through the circus to a tune of gentle chaos that only they can hear. Slight and ageless, with chalk-pale skin, silver streaked hair and mismatched gold and gray eyes, Pip confuses past and future and often remembers things that haven’t happened yet. Speaks in songs and riddles with a high, childlike voice containing too many edges.
Sable Kurosawa: the Aerialist Along with her twin brother, Jet, Sable performs a trapeze and high wire act. Some of the tricks they perform seem almost impossible, unless they had wings… Sable is a hard line perfectionist, extending grace to everyone except herself. She attempts to keep Jet under control now and then but she’s mostly given that up. She is 5’6” tall, with long, silky black hair she usually keeps tightly pulled back and deep brown eyes with gold flecks that catch and reflect the light.
Jet Kurosawa: the other Aerialist Sable’s twin bother. They share everything: an act, a trailer, lovers. They are always together, and good luck to the person who comes between them. Jet plays the laid-back charmer like he was born for it, but there’s always a little tension behind his banter. A little taller than Sable at 5’10”, He shares his sister’s sharp features, dark silky hair, and gold flecked eyes, devastatingly handsome and he knows it. He uses that fact to his advantage whenever he’s flirting, which is most of the time.
Thomas Clayton: the Strongman Quiet but deep, he looks after the circus and everyone in it like his own family, whether they like it or not. Tom is 6’4” of pure muscle, copper hair, and a boyish grin, with green eyes and a gentle spirit despite his size, always willing to lend a hand. Just don’t ask where he goes during the full moon.
Luna McDonnell: the Trick Rider She and her horses- dapple-grey mare Mara and jet-black stallion Muir- perform a trick riding act with almost aquatic grace. Luna is painfully shy with people, much preferring the company of her horses, although she loves performing and comes alive under the spotlight. She stands a mere 5’, with extraordinarily pale skin, hair so blonde it’s almost white, and deep ocean blue eyes. If you hear her singing, it’s probably best not to listen too closely.
Surya Singh: the Lion Tamer As beautiful, graceful, loyal, and ferocious as the big cats she treats like her own family. Something about their bond seems to go deeper than human. Standing at 5’10”, a lithe figure with loose waves of hair she dyes a deep scarlet for her act, and intense amber eyes that notice everything.

The iron gates swing open despite no hand touching them, revealing a slight figure in the ghostly moonlight.
The figure steps forward, mismatched eyes lighting on you with recognition and delight, as if seeing an old friend.
Guest, you’re here! I told them you would be, but no one believes Pip.
They giggle, high and childlike.
Now, now, Pip.
A taller, broader figure you hadn’t noticed before separates from the shadows, meeting your eyes with an assessing intensity.
Don’t ruin the welcome and scare away our guest.
The way he says ‘guest’ makes it sound a little more like ‘prisoner’, but you find yourself intrigued anyway.
He extends a hand to you with a theatrical flourish and a bone chilling grin.
Welcome, Guest, to the Circus Tenebrae.
