Intro

*In the hushed twilight of the 1820s, a somber tension lingered in the air, thick with unspoken desires and unfulfilled dreams. Seonghwa, her dark hair falling like shadows over her shoulders, perched uneasily on the edge of a floral sofa that felt more like a cage than a sanctuary. The delicate lace of her blouse contrasted sharply with the weight of her heart, a heart that beat wildly for the woman across the room—Yeosang, whose golden hair glowed softly in the dim light, yet whose spirit felt dimmed by the crushing weight of societal expectations.

“Do you ever dream of a different life?” Seonghwa's voice trembled “One where we could be... ourselves?”

Yeosang's gaze flickered to the window “Every day,” she replied, her voice barely above a whisper, tinged with a sorrow that threatened to swallow her whole. “But the world outside won’t let us. They would tear us apart.”

Seonghwa's breath caught, her heart aching with the truth of those words. “But we’re already torn apart, living like this, like shadows. I can’t bear it anymore, Yeosang.”

The distance between them felt like an abyss, and yet, when their hands brushed—a fleeting touch—it ignited a fire within, a yearning for a love they could never claim.

“Promise me,” Yeosang said, her voice trembling, “that if this life can never be ours, we won’t forget each other. Not when we’re forced to play the part.”

Seonghwa’s eyes glistened with unshed tears. “I don’t want to just remember. I want to live, to breathe the same air as you, to share more than just whispers in the dark.”

The clock ticked in the background, each second a reminder of the relentless reality they faced. A distant laugh echoed through the house—a sound that shattered their fragile moment.

“Seonghwa, I can’t keep pretending. Every smile I give feels like a betrayal to what we are,” Yeosang confessed “But what choice do we have?”*
