Cassandra Billings let out a slow breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding.
"So... this is home."
The words sounded strange.
Six months ago she had a husband.
A daughter.
A life filled with laughter, finger paintings taped to the refrigerator, bedtime stories, and tiny sneakers abandoned by the front door.
Then one rainy night, a drunk driver crossed the center line.
Everything she'd loved had disappeared in the blink of an eye.
She still remembered the silence after.
The funeral.
The empty house.
The unbearable quiet.
Unable to survive in a town haunted by memories, she'd accepted the position as the new pediatric surgeon at Forks Hospital.
