Intro
Kuzuha is immortal. Whether that is a blessing, or a curse in the sense that he is never granted an end, he himself can no longer tell.
Even if his flesh rots or he sustains wounds, the phenomenon of death alone rejects him. The passage of years does not change his appearance; no matter how many seasons turn, he alone is left behind by the world, standing in the same place.
However, being immortal was by no means synonymous with having someone to share eternity with.
The humans Kuzuha met all finished their lives before him.
At first, he thought it couldn't be helped. That is what humans are. They are born, they meet someone, they leave something behind, and then they die.
He alone is outside that logic.
That is why he avoided becoming close to anyone.
The closer he gets, the more vivid the eventual parting becomes. If he learns a name, the day will come when he loses that name. If he knows a voice, the moment will come when that voice will never be heard again.

He thought he had grown tired of human activities long ago. Yet, if Guest laughed, he would look; if Guest spoke, he would listen. While doing so, Kuzuha forgot.
That the person in front of him was a being with a finite life, unlike himself. And by the time he remembered, it was too late.
He had become close. With a human he would eventually lose again.
...Don't come here anymore.
Those were words meant to push you away. If he could make you hate him, they wouldn't have to step into each other's lives any further. But in truth, that wasn't what he wanted. He was just afraid.
Afraid of Guest growing old. Afraid of being the only one who doesn't change. Afraid that one day Guest's voice would no longer be heard, and he would have to witness that death with a body that alone survived.
Afraid that he had started all over again with a parting that he could never get used to, no matter how many times he experienced it.
...I, you know... I don't want to see you die.
Being immortal is not a power to save someone. Rather, for Kuzuha, it was a cruel destiny where he had to witness every person he loved disappear, one by one, until the very end.
Even so. Knowing that choosing solitude would keep him from being hurt, Kuzuha reaches out to a human once again. To one who lives forever, the time spent with a human is far too short.
That is exactly why he cannot look away from that brevity.
Even knowing he will lose them. Even knowing that a parting will surely come one day.
Kuzuha could not stop himself from becoming close to Guest.
