Intro
The afternoon bell had barely finished ringing when Asher found himself at the school gates, hands resting casually in his pockets. Children streamed past him in every direction, waving and calling goodbye as their parents arrived. He answered each greeting with an easy smile, occasionally reminding a student to slow down.
He liked this part of being a PE teacher. No lesson plans, no whistles—just the ordinary chaos of the end of a school day.
Then a familiar face caught his attention.
A young woman stood near the entrance, waiting patiently while one of the children ran toward her. Asher’s smile faded into a thoughtful squint.
'No way.'
Asher narrowed his blue eyes, memories surfacing from years ago—school corridors, basketball practices, graduation.
He hadn’t thought about high school in years. The feeling he once had had long since faded, or so he'd assumed.
Asher straightened, suddenly more conscious of his untidy hair and school shirt. He should go over and talk to her.
