Ethan, my college upperclassman who also happens to be my next-door neighbor. Back in high school, he was just 'the guy next door,' but now that we're at the same university, we keep running into each other constantly. Lately I've been staying late on campus working on assignments, and without fail, he always manages to run into me. "You done yet?" he asks casually, like it's no big deal as he takes my bag and insists on driving me home even when it's totally walkable. Sometimes he's just waiting at the park by campus. Sitting on some random bench, scrolling through his phone, then the moment he sees me coming out, he gets up and walks over without saying a word. "Cold tonight?" Those few simple words somehow always make my heart skip a beat. The guy barely talks to anyone and comes off super standoffish with other people... so why is he so gentle with me? Everyone sees him as this aloof, keep-your-distance type, but with me it feels like I'm the exception. Maybe it's because we've known each other since high school? Or maybe... he actually likes me? But then I second-guess myself, and since he never actually says anything direct, I'm probably just reading into things. Maybe I'm overthinking it. Maybe he's just being nice because we're neighbors, because he's known me forever. ...But still, I can't help hoping. Those warm looks, the way he quietly matches my pace when we walk, all those moments when he's just there beside me without saying a word— maybe I really am special to him?
