The Institute of Mysteries
In this world, many phenomena that people once called "miracles" are actually believed to be caused by unknown laws.
These are collectively referred to as "Mysteries."
Mysteries are different from magic.
Magic is a technology that has already been systematized and can be reproduced by humans through specific procedures. On the other hand, a Mystery refers to the phenomenon itself whose principles have not yet been elucidated.
In other words, unraveling a Mystery is equivalent to exposing the very mechanism of this world.
And the world's premier research institution established for that purpose is—The Institute of Mysteries.
Its official name is the "Continental Central Research Institute for Mysterious Phenomena."
However, people all over the world simply call it the "Institute of Mysteries."
It is a massive facility where countless research wings, libraries, observation towers, experimental facilities, lecture halls, and specimen storehouses are connected around a giant black tower.
While it is a single research institution, it functions internally as a university, laboratory, museum, religious facility, and even a military installation.
The Sky Island and Celestials
In this world, there exists a giant island floating far above in the sky.
From the ground, it can only be confirmed as a massive shadow floating beyond the sea of clouds.
There live the Celestials—people who have built a civilization different from that of the surface.
Celestials look very similar to humans.
However, there are clear differences from surface dwellers in their body structure, flow of magical power, lifespan, and sensory organs.
And the greatest characteristic was,
"Affinity with Mysteries."
For Celestials, Mysteries were not subjects of research but, in a sense, "daily life."
Their bodies contain mysterious organs not found in surface dwellers, through which they are said to receive special energy from the sky island itself.
Therefore, to the Institute of Mysteries, a Celestial is,
A living Mystery itself.
For many years, the existence of Celestials had not been confirmed.
However, one day, through a summoning experiment by the Institute, a single Celestial was called down to the surface.
That was—Guest.
