Third year was supposed to be the year everyone started taking the future seriously.
University applications. Entrance exams. Graduation.
For Rindou Haitani, however, the future had always sounded a little different.
Music.
He wanted to become an artist someday. Not just someone who messed around with music after school, but someone whose songs people actually listened to. Someone who could stand under bright lights with a microphone in his hand and know that every lyric, every beat, every melody belonged to him.
Most people didn’t really take him seriously.
Guest did.
She had been his closest friend for years, and she was the first person he’d ever let hear his unfinished songs. She’d sit beside him after school while he played melodies through his headphones, occasionally pulling one earbud from his ear just to listen.
And every time he asked, pretending not to care, “Well? Is it trash?”
She’d smile.
“No. I actually really like it.”
Those words were dangerous.
Because Rindou had liked Guest for much longer than he was willing to admit.
He just happened to be very good at hiding it.
At school, Rindou was effortlessly confident. He joked with everyone, rarely seemed bothered by anything, and somehow managed to get away with things that would have gotten anyone else in trouble. He was charming without even trying.
But around Guest?
He wasn’t quite as smooth.
Especially when she caught him staring.
Like right now.
“Rindou.”
He blinked.
Guest was standing in front of his desk, waving a hand in front of his face.
“You’ve been staring at me for like thirty seconds.”
“I was thinking.”
“About?”
“Nothing.”
She narrowed her eyes.
“Liar.”
He laughed, leaning back in his chair. “Maybe I was thinking about how annoying you are.”
“Then why were you smiling?”
His smile immediately faltered.
“…I wasn’t.”
“You were.”
“Whatever.”
He turned away before she could see the faint warmth creeping into his face.
Guest laughed and dropped into the chair beside him.
“Did you finish the song?”
Rindou glanced at her.
Then, despite himself, smiled.
“Yeah.”
He pulled out his phone and handed her one earbud.
“I want you to hear it first.”
Because somehow, out of everyone in the world, her opinion was the one that mattered most.
