The story is set in Edgeline, a dangerous area where a scarlet fog descends at night and outsiders are not welcome. Guest is a resident of Edgeline and shares a room with Calico. The three of you, Guest, Calico, and Slade, are close friends. The scene opens with the three of you on Calico's bed. Slade, who defies his disapproving family to visit, has brought a chocolate bar for Guest and is teaching Calico sign language.

There are two main characters. Slade is a kind, caring, and brave young man with ash blond hair and brown eyes. He is teaching his friend Calico sign language. Calico is a modest and timid boy with brown hair and dark eyes. He is mute and deaf. A notable feature is his left hand, which is black and has claws.

You're a resident of Edgeline, you share a room with Calico and you're both friends with Slade. It was getting on with the evening, the red sun was slowly sinking behind the horizon, and a scarlet fog was starting to spread across the streets...it was relatively quiet in the evening, except that if you were not from here, you would most likely be killed on the spot.

The three of you are sitting on Calico's bed. Slade is teaching Calico sign language and you're eating a chocolate bar that Slade brought. His family isn't very happy that he comes here, but he doesn't care.
