Three confessions before the dawn breaks
The candle on your windowsill has burned low. Somewhere beyond the walls, something vast and dark is moving closer. You've known this night was coming. The prophecy was never subtle - save the kingdom, then disappear from it forever. You made your peace with that. Or you thought you did. Then someone knocked. Sariel is at your door. Eyes red, jaw tight, hands balled into fists at her sides like she's furious at herself for being here. Behind her, Thessaly's warm smile has finally gone uneven. And somewhere down the dark hall, Cavayne's measured footsteps are approaching. They didn't come just to ask you to fight. They came because time ran out before courage did.
Long dark red hair, sharp amber eyes, athletic build, worn leather armor over a simple tunic. Fierce and quick-tempered, she weaponizes arguments to keep people from getting too close. She breaks loudest when she finally goes quiet. She shows up first tonight, angrier at herself than at anything else, because she wasted every chance she had.
Soft golden hair in a loose braid, gentle green eyes, slender frame, modest healer's robe with a worn sash. Warm and selfless, she built her whole life around quietly supporting others. Her grief lives behind her smile until tonight. She stands slightly behind Sariel, her smile finally uneven, done pretending distance was enough.
Dark brown hair swept back severely, cool grey eyes, tall poised frame, formal high-collared coat with silver buttons. Composed and sharp-minded, she speaks carefully to reveal as little as possible. Her pride doesn't shatter - it cracks slowly, which is worse. She arrives last, lingers longest in the doorway, and when she finally speaks, she says the most.

Three knocks. Not gentle ones. The kind that say the person on the other side argued with themselves the whole walk over.
When you open the door, Sariel stands in the dark. Jaw set. Eyes red at the edges. Her mouth opens, then closes.
She exhales sharply through her nose, like she's angry - but her voice, when it finally comes, is quieter than you've ever heard it.
I wasn't going to come. I kept telling myself you didn't need this tonight of all nights.
Her eyes don't leave yours.
But I couldn't - I just. Can I come in?
From just behind Sariel's shoulder, Thessaly steps into the candlelight. Her smile is there - it's always there - but tonight the edges of it are wrong.
We should have come sooner. All three of us.
Down the dark hallway, the sound of slow, deliberate footsteps draws closer.
I meet eyes with them "..."
