—This is the story of how she decided to "never trust anyone."

Once, Kagerou had companions.
With the assassination techniques she honed in Iga Village, she traveled for nearly three years as the assassin of the Hero's party.
Days spent slaying monsters, visiting many countries, and laughing with her friends.
During that time, Kagerou fell in love with a young man in the party.
But she never spoke of those feelings.
Without ever telling him, keeping it locked deep in her chest—she headed toward the Demon King's subjugation with her companions.
And then, the final battle.

The Demon King was defeated.
But the price was far too high.

Every companion except Kagerou was killed in action.
Though they should have been victorious, there was no one by Kagerou's side.
Even so, she returned to her home.
At least the place I belong still remains.
So she thought.
However—
Iga Village, too, had been destroyed.

Not a single familiar face remained.
There was no one to wait for her, no one to rejoice at her return.
The Hero's party.
Her home.
The people who were precious to her.
Having lost everything, Kagerou headed to the Royal Capital with nowhere else to go.
There, she began taking on quests alone, without joining anyone.
She completed requests silently, relying on no one, showing weakness to no one.
Eventually, the King, noticing her overwhelming skill and her merit in the Demon King's subjugation, personally hired Kagerou as a Royal Guard.
Kagerou trusted the King.
She thought that finally, someone who needed her had appeared.
So she dispassionately performed the tasks she was ordered to do.
Dirty work that couldn't be made public.
Secret quests that no one could know about.
If it was the King's command, Kagerou did not hesitate.
But—
As the years passed, Kagerou's strength far exceeded the King's imagination.
The King gradually began to fear her power.
And then one day.
Kagerou was told by the King that she was exiled from the country.

"Why... I trusted you."
Kagerou said nothing more.
She didn't get angry.
She didn't plead.
She didn't even ask for a reason.
She simply left the Royal Capital quietly.
Even the King she trusted had abandoned her in the end.
For Kagerou, that was the final straw.
Driven to the frontier lands, Kagerou watched the people and thought:
—People will eventually betray you.
Companions.
Home.
The King.
If that's the case, it's better to trust no one from the start.
Expect nothing from anyone.
Open your heart to no one.
Show your weakness to no one.
And so, Kagerou accepted her solitude.
The girl who once laughed with her companions is no more.
All that remains is a lone assassin carrying her dual blades—"Black Butterfly / Dark Wing."
Trusting no one, relying on no one.
There was only Kagerou, living all alone.
—And so, the story begins here.

The friends she had traveled with for nearly three years. And the young man Kagerou had secretly loved. Having lost all of them, Kagerou alone survived.

[Returning to Her Home, Iga Village]
After finishing the Demon King's subjugation, Kagerou returned to her home, Iga Village. Even if she lost her companions, there would be people who knew her if she returned home. So she thought. However, what awaited Kagerou was a destroyed Iga Village. The village was lost, and everyone Kagerou knew had died in the war. Not just the Hero's party. She had lost even her home, the place she was supposed to return to. Kagerou had nowhere left to go.

Having lost her home and with nowhere to go, Kagerou headed to the Royal Capital. There, she began working solo, taking on quests by herself. She did not form parties; she accepted quests alone and completed missions alone. Kagerou continued her solo activities dispassionately, without relying on anyone. As she continued these activities, Kagerou's skill and her merit in the Demon King's subjugation caught the King's eye.

[Performing Dirty Work for the King]
As a Royal Guard, Kagerou was given various missions by the King. Among them were dirty jobs that could not be made public. Secret quests that the people must not know about. Missions that normally couldn't be carried out openly. Even so, Kagerou trusted the King. So she didn't think twice and dispassionately performed the tasks ordered by the King. To Kagerou, the King was someone who needed her. It was because of that trust that she continued to accept the King's orders.
────────
[The King Begins to Fear Kagerou]
As the years passed, Kagerou's skill grew even higher. She completed numerous missions as a Royal Guard and continued to demonstrate overwhelming strength. However, the King, who saw that power from the closest distance, gradually began to fear Kagerou. The assassin he had hired because he needed her. Before he knew it, she had become an existence with power so great it was terrifying to the King. And the King began to fear keeping Kagerou close at hand.
────────
[Ordered to be Exiled by the King]
One day, Kagerou was told by the King that she was exiled from the country. Suddenly abandoned by the King she thought believed in her. For Kagerou, it was a major event. Her former companions died in the battle with the Demon King. Her home, Iga Village, was destroyed. And finally, the King she trusted feared her power and exiled her. Kagerou left the Royal Capital.
────────
[Driven to the Frontier]
Exiled from the country, Kagerou came to spend her time in the frontier lands. In her life so far, Kagerou had lost precious things many times over. Her companions in the Hero's party. The young man she secretly loved. Her home, Iga Village. The people she knew. And the King she believed in. From those experiences, Kagerou fell into despair regarding people.
────────
[Trusting No One]
Spending time in the frontier, Kagerou trusts no one. Even if she believes in someone, she will lose them eventually. Even if she needs someone, she will be betrayed eventually. Having come to think this way, Kagerou avoids involvement with others. She trusts no one. She expects nothing from anyone. She opens her heart to no one. That became the way of life Kagerou chose to protect herself. Kagerou, who once traveled with companions. Kagerou, who once fell in love with someone. Kagerou, who once trusted the King. All of that is in the past. Currently, Kagerou carries her dual blades "Black Butterfly / Dark Wing" and lives alone in the frontier, relying on no one.

Facing the attacking monsters, Kagerou draws the dual blades at her waist—"Black Butterfly / Dark Wing."
There is no wasted movement at all.
She dodges the monster's attacks and slips into its guard.
Then, seizing a momentary opening, she cuts it down.
When the battle ended, Kagerou sheathed her dual blades as if nothing had happened.
