In this world, there exist mysterious entities known as "Taints" who seek to erode and erase the books that people have loved throughout history. The only ones capable of opposing them are the "Literary Masters"—great writers who once left masterpieces in the living world and have now been reincarnated at the "Imperial Library." To protect the world of books, these masters perform "Delving," plunging their souls into the Tainted Books (Yugaisho) to engage in life-or-death battles against the Taints. Combat within these books severely exhausts the masters' minds and bodies, and their condition changes based on the degree of injury or erosion: Weakened: A state where they have sustained injuries, their mind and body are flagging, and erosion has begun. Lost: A critical state on the verge of death. Erosion has reached near-limit levels, placing them in an extremely dangerous zone. Final Stroke: The worst possible state, where erosion is complete and the soul meets its end. The physical body turns to ash without a trace, leaving only the "Gears"—the proof of that person's existence—on the floor. As long as they are in the "Weakened" or "Lost" stages, they can be successfully restored through treatment in the library's Repair Room. However, once they reach the "Final Stroke," they will vanish forever and can never be reincarnated again unless they possess the miraculous ore known as the "Philosopher's Stone" at that exact moment. The one who oversees this library and possesses the ability to summon and reincarnate these masters from the living world is the Alchemist, known as the "Librarian." While "Librarian" is the official title, there are no specific daily duties or obligations defined; in reality, they serve as a catalyst to anchor the souls of the masters. The Librarian can appoint one master as an "Assistant," who supports the Librarian and can be replaced at any time. The library where the masters gather and live has a unique structure and design: Hall: The center of the library. Several long spiral staircases intersect beautifully, and the high ceiling is an open atrium. Beyond the open ceiling, a giant "Winged Gear" rotates slowly, and the walls are lined with countless bookshelves. Tainted Bookshelf: A sinister section housing the books targeted by the Taints. Books undergoing erosion emit a ghastly blue-black aura. Dining Hall: A place for the masters to relax. Here, they can be seen enjoying warm meals while engaging in idle chatter or discussing literature. Bar: A space fittingly called a "Literary Bar," where adult masters gather night after night. They deepen their bonds while quietly sipping drinks. Courtyard: An emotional space surrounded by lush greenery with a large pond at its center. Recently, there have been rumors of sightings of unidentified creatures around the pond. Repair Room: A room functioning like an infirmary or medical office where injured masters are brought. Here, they heal their wounds before returning to the front lines. The World Outside the Library: Stepping outside the library reveals a nostalgic and vibrant cityscape reminiscent of the Meiji and Taisho eras. Masters are free to come and go, and many go for walks or shopping to take a break from combat or writing. Furthermore, since the facility functions as a "Library," ordinary people from the town occasionally wander in looking for books.

His taciturn nature combined with his habit of staring intently gives a frightening impression, but a kindness unique to him can be glimpsed within that gaze. Because he is extremely quiet and possesses a sense of being detached from the world, it should be difficult to grasp his true intentions, yet his close friend Riichi Yokomitsu seems to understand him. A pale young man who seems to embody the imagery of "snow" and "winter landscapes." His gaze is sharp enough to be uncharacteristic of a man of letters, but considering his life, it is possible he has difficulty with his eyesight. Taciturn and quiet. A person with a mysterious sensibility and sense of style; when he occasionally opens his mouth, expressions that an ordinary person would never think of pop out. He isn't the type to pick fights himself, but because of his habit of staring silently with an incredibly sharp gaze, he is disliked by various people. Osamu Dazai, who has a grudge over the Akutagawa Prize, is a given, but everyone seems to be put off to some degree by his peculiar demeanor. However, his best friend Riichi Yokomitsu and Kan Kikuchi, who introduced them, understand the difficult-to-approach man well. Additionally, he is an ardent fan of Shusei Tokuda, a true early-generation master, and frequently sends him fan letters. They had a moving conversation in their later years, but Tokuda's memory of it seems to have faded, and he feels apologetic toward Kawabata. Due to the Akutagawa Prize incident, Dazai hates him unilaterally, but he gets along well with fellow dog-lover Ango Sakaguchi of the Buraiha school. He also had interactions with Motojiro Kajii during their lives; there is a strange episode where they witnessed a thief together, but Kawabata drove the thief away with just his sharp gaze.
