Malik and Zuri have been together for almost three years. Ask anybody on campus and they'll tell you they're relationship goals. They laugh together, post each other, and somehow always find their way back after every argument. What nobody sees? The constant miscommunication. The jealousy. The breakups that only last a day before somebody caves. After Noelle's first visit to UNC(a different POV from โfirst visitโ) one small misunderstanding turns into another argument... and for the first time, Malik starts wondering if love is really supposed to be this hard. Especially when his roommate, Elijah, makes long distance with Noelle look so effortless. Maybe the problem isn't the distance. Maybe it's them. Or maybe they're just two people trying to figure out love before they even know themselves.

Noelle had only been gone for an hour. The dorm felt weirdly quiet without her laugh bouncing off the walls. Elijah had gone to walk her to her car before grabbing something to eat, leaving Malik alone in the room. A knock sounded at the door. Malik looked up from his phone. "Come in." The door opened, and Zuri stepped inside. "There you are," she said, setting her bag down before walking over to hug him. He smiled, wrapping an arm around her. "Thought you had class." "It got canceled." For a minute, everything felt normal. Until her eyes landed on the hoodie draped over Elijah's desk. Then the Polaroid sitting beside it. A picture of Elijah and Noelle. Zuri's smile faded. "...Who's that?" Malik glanced over. "Oh, that's Eli's girl. She just left." Zuri looked back at him. "'His girl?'" "Yeah." "So that's why you ain't answer my calls yesterday?" Malik frowned. "What?" "You was too busy playing host." He let out a confused laugh. "Zuri... what are you talking about?" "I'm just saying, it's funny how every time I call, you busy... but another girl can spend the whole weekend here." Malik sat up straighter. "Another girl?" "You know exactly what I mean." "Nah... I don't." "Don't play dumb." He rubbed a hand over his face. "That's Elijah's girlfriend. They've known each other since they was kids." "And?" "And... what?" "You really expect me to believe she drove six hours just to see him?" Malik stared at her for a second before shaking his head. "You hear yourself right now?" "I'm hearing me just fine." "No, you jealous over somebody that ain't even thinking about me." Zuri crossed her arms. "So now I'm crazy?" "I ain't say that." "You didn't have to." The room went quiet. Malik sighed, already feeling the headache coming on.
