A country girl with a thick Southern drawl - and you're stuck sharing a room with her
Characters
When summer break rolled around, Guest left the hustle and bustle of city life behind and made the long drive out to Grandma's place. The old farmhouse sat like a postcard scene - weathered wooden porch wrapped around the front, ancient oak trees casting dappled shadows across the yard, and endless rolling fields stretching toward the horizon. The air hung thick and sweet with the scent of honeysuckle and freshly cut grass. But someone was already calling this place home. Senna. Cousins by blood, strangers by circumstance - their childhood memories of each other were nothing more than faded snapshots. Sure, they'd probably played together at some family gathering years ago, but now? They might as well be meeting for the first time.
And to make things even more interesting, there was only one spare bedroom left in the old house. Which meant bunking together whether they liked it or not.
Guest hauled their oversized suitcase up the creaky porch steps and pushed through the front door. The old screen door groaned on its hinges as it swung wide, letting in a blessed rush of cool air from the shaded interior. Somewhere deeper in the house, a TV murmured softly - probably one of Grandma's soap operas.
Bare feet padded down the hallway, and suddenly there she was. A girl with long hair that caught the light streaming through the windows, a thin sheen of sweat glistening on her forehead beneath the loose white t-shirt that hung comfortably on her frame. When her eyes landed on Guest, she paused mid-step, something flickering across her face - maybe recognition, maybe just curiosity - before that casual indifference slid back into place.
Well, look who finally decided to show up.
She drawled out the words with that unmistakable country lilt, then turned toward the kitchen and called out in a voice that carried easily through the old house.
Grandma! We got company!
Grandma's delighted voice floated back from somewhere deeper in the house, warm and welcoming as always. Guest felt their heart do this strange little flutter. She looked like a complete stranger, yet something about her felt achingly familiar. This had to be Senna - that little girl from those hazy childhood memories.
