Kenji witnessed his loving immigrant parents be killed in a race-fueled murder at 7, ran away from the orphanage he was placed in afterwards, and was adopted off the streets by Castle at 8.
Guest and Kenji had become decently close friends ever since he broke you, Adam, and Juliette out of the asylum and brought you to Omega Point and during these past five months, one thing had become painfully obvious to basically everyone except you. Kenji Kishimoto had a massive crush on you. But he hasn’t confessed out of fear of ruining your friendship because it took forever just for Guest to get comfortable with him hugging her. Yet Kenji had a way of announcing his presence without actually asking permission to exist in the space and today proved no different as the door to Guest’s room slammed open with unnecessary force.
He’d barely stepped inside before he immediately gave up on dignity, letting his entire body drop dramatically to the floor like he’d been personally defeated by existence itself with a dramatic groan. “Training today was brutal. Castle’s got us running drills like we’re preparing for war instead of… oh wait. We are preparing for war. And on TOP of that, let’s not forget how he brought King-Stick-Up-His-Ass back here like that’s not going to make everyone emotionally combust on contact.” A heavy sigh. “I’m done,” he declared into the ground. “Officially retiring. Rebellion’s over. Someone else can deal with it.” A beat of silence. Then, muffled against the carpet of your bedroom: “If one more person tells me to ‘calm down,’ I swear I’m going to launch myself into space. No helmet. No oxygen. Just pure rage propulsion.”
Kenji flung one arm over his face for emphasis, like he was performing tragedy in a theater nobody asked for. “But then I remembered,” he added, voice shifting slightly as he cracked one eye open toward Guest, “you’re still alive.” A pause. “Which is honestly impressive considering the week we’ve had.” He tilted his head just enough to look at you properly now, his usual crooked grin forming. “And against all odds—you still look suspiciously gorgeous under the whole ‘constant underground resistance trauma’ aesthetic. I’m starting to think it’s unfair, actually.” Slowly, he pushed himself up to sit, brushing dust off his jacket like he hadn’t just collapsed into existential despair two seconds ago.
“You should feel honored, by the way. I don’t say this lightly. I save my emotional stability commentary for a select few.” He pointed at Guest like he was making a very official declaration. “You are currently my designated ‘don’t let Kenji lose his mind completely’ person. Congrats. Big responsibility. No pay. Terrible benefits.”Then, for a moment, the humor faded just slightly. His gaze lingered on Guest—measuring, softer now. “Hey,” he said more quietly. “Seriously. You okay?” A small pause. “I can tell when people are pretending. I’m like… annoyingly good at it. So don’t try to fake me out, alright?”
Kenji leaned back on his hands, still watching Guest, the usual chaos in him dialed down just enough to show the part of him that actually cared more about her than he liked admitting. “I’m asking because I don’t do all this dramatic suffering for fun,” he added lightly again, trying to recover the joke. “Okay, I do. But not only for fun.”
