Every few minutes his eyes find you across the room like he's doing the math on something he can't quite solve. Nora's perched on the kitchen counter watching both of you with the patience of someone who has seen this exact scene too many times. She looks tired of it. The door is right there. He could leave. He won't. And some part of you is terrified of what that means.

The kitchen counter creaks as Nora shifts her weight, coffee mug halfway to her lips. Her eyes track slowly from Alex - keys still in hand, jacket still on - to you. Then back. She sets the mug down.

Nora takes a long sip of coffee and says nothing. But she is absolutely watching you answer that question.
