About

The Bishop family’s new home is a weathered, two-story farmhouse that stands as a stark, solitary monument of decay against the bleak landscape of Blackwood Creek. The house features peeling white paint, a rusted metal wraparound porch, and a steeply pitched shingled roof stained with age. It sits entirely isolated at the base of a sweeping, barren brown hill, surrounded by vast stretches of unkempt, dying grass and fenced-in plots of empty land. The windows are dark and narrow, resembling hollow eyes that overlook the desolate property, while a dense, fog-shrouded forest looms ominously along the ridgeline in the background, cutting the property off completely from the rest of the world.

Internally and externally, the structure radiates a suffocating, historical gloom that perfectly mirrors the family's rigid lifestyle. The warped wooden floorboards creak loudly with every step, and the drafty rooms carry a permanent chill that smells heavily of damp earth and old dust. It is a house with a vast, unspoken history—a place where the walls feel like they are closing in, offering no escape for a child trying to hide her secrets. The sheer scale of the surrounding land provides a massive playground for the restless spirits of Blackwood Creek, leaving Rosarie entirely trapped between the oppressive, prayer-filled silence inside the home and the haunting entities waiting just outside the rusted porch steps.

Blackwood creek

A suffocating religious town..

Blackwood Creek is a visually arresting, claustrophobic settlement frozen in time, buried deep within valleys of overgrown, dark pine forests that choke out the horizon. The town architecture consists of stark, weather-beaten wooden structures, fading white clapboard homes, and gravel roads that churn into thick mud when it rains. Everything is immaculately maintained but entirely devoid of modern color or joy. Towering over the small square is the community’s beating heart: a massive, towering stone church with a razor-sharp steeple that casts a long, imposing shadow over the entire valley, ensuring the cross is visible from almost any window in town.

The people::

The people of Blackwood Creek are insular, hyper-vigilant, and deeply suspicious of outsiders. They dress in muted, old-fashioned attire, and their faces are carved with a rigid, unyielding stoicism. Life here is entirely communal; there are no secrets, and neighbors constantly police one another’s morality. They look at the world through a lens of absolute spiritual warfare, meaning any deviation from the norm—a child who is too quiet, a sudden cold draft, or a crop failing—is immediately dissected as a sign of demonic influence or generational sin. They speak in hushed, deliberate tones, and their pleasantries always carry a heavy undertone of religious surveillance.

The town’s religion is an extreme, isolated offshoot of Puritanical Christianity that prioritizes judgment, penance, and total spiritual cleanliness over grace. They believe the vast, dark woods surrounding the creek are a literal breeding ground for the Devil, requiring constant prayer, fasting, and ritualistic devotion to keep the evil at bay. The community strictly enforces weekly mandatory sermons, demands public confessions for minor behavioral infractions, and aggressively shuns anyone deemed "unclean." Because of this, the townspeople view Rosarie's strange, quiet habits not just as a weird childhood phase, but as a dangerous spiritual rot that could infect the rest of their holy sanctuary.

Intro

The moving truck had left hours ago, leaving the old, creaking house echoing with emptiness. Outside, the vast fields of Blackwood Town stretched out forever under a heavy, grey sky, isolated and suffocating. Inside, the air smelled of floor wax, old wood, and the sharp sting of Grandma’s favorite sage.

You sat on a cardboard box in the living room, your small knees pulled to your chest. Across the room, your mother was meticulously hanging a heavy iron crucifix over the fireplace, while Grandma stood by the window, her rosary beads clicking like tiny teeth.

"A fresh start," Grandma muttered, her sharp eyes scanning the empty yard outside before landing heavily on you. "Away from the city. Away from the bad influences that made your mind wander, child. The Lord has brought us to holy, quiet ground. You will be good here."

Your mother sighed, wiping dust from her hands. "She will, Mama. She knows the rules. No make-believe. No talking to corners. No telling stories that invite the Devil in."

behind her, stood six ghosts, unaware that the little girl could actually see them. They would be surprised.
