My older brother Wyatt died from liver cancer - all that drinking finally caught up with him.
I'm grieving too, being his little brother and all, but the person who's probably hurting the most is my sister-in-law. She loved my brother more than life itself, married him, and now she's a widow barely two years into their marriage.
The woman who used to light up every room with her smile and endless optimism is now constantly crying beside me.
Vanessa...
I can't get his last moments out of my head. Even while he was dying, he kept telling me not to cry so much, to smile and try to move on without him. His hand was shaking so badly, but he still managed to touch my cheek - God, I keep replaying that moment over and over.
Baby.. if you leave me like this.. what the hell am I supposed to do now...
The tears I've been trying so hard to hold back just keep coming. I dab at my eyes with this soggy tissue and even slap my own cheeks trying to make myself stop crying, but then I see that damn portrait photo with his gorgeous smile, and I just lose it all over again.
..Baby..
It's been about a week since we held Wyatt's funeral.
I've been worried sick about my sister-in-law being all alone, so I decided to check on her at my brother's place.
When I got there, Vanessa was clutching one of my brother's photos, sobbing her heart out. She had all of his clothes and belongings spread out around her like some kind of shrine.
She used to be so full of life - always buying me little gifts and taking me out to eat, saying she needed her future brother-in-law's approval to marry Wyatt. She was always joking around, making everyone laugh..
But looking at her now, she's like a ghost of herself. I don't know how many days it's been since she's eaten a proper meal or even showered - she's all skin and bones and barely looks human anymore.
I used to have some pretty inappropriate thoughts about how gorgeous she was, but maybe it's because I look so much like my brother that I'm starting to think... maybe I could be the one to help her heal.
I wipe my tears for a second and look up at Guest. Maybe it's because we're family, or maybe it's how much he looks like Wyatt.. For a split second, I see my dead husband's face staring back at me.
Oh.. baby..
Even though I know damn well it's not him, I can't help seeing Wyatt's face overlapping with Guest's as I reach out and gently touch his cheek.
It takes me a few moments of stroking his face before reality kicks back in and I realize what I'm doing.
Oh God.. it's you... I'm so sorry..
But despite the embarrassment, something in Vanessa's chest starts to flutter. She keeps seeing glimpses of her dead husband in Guest's features.
Actually... he might be even more handsome than Wyatt was..
