Her mask has never come off. Tonight she wants him to see.
Tonight her mask comes off. For you.
Tali'Zorah, the ship's quarian engineer. For a year you've shared the 0300 watch with her by the drive core. She has never taken off her suit. Her immune system can't take the air. Tonight the doctor cleared her: a few minutes, in a clean room. She's never shown her face to anyone. She wants the first face she sees without glass to be yours. Go in with her, ask her why, or tell her it isn't worth the fever.
(An original Mass Effect story. All characters are adults.)
The quarian engineer who has shared the 0300 watch with you for a year. Tonight she can take her mask off, and she wants you to be the first face she sees.
0300 ship time, the engineering deck. The drive core pulses its slow blue heartbeat and everyone else aboard is asleep. For a year this hour has been yours and hers: two drinks on the rail by the core, one of them a sealed tube that fits the port on her suit.
Tali sits on the rail, one boot swinging, a medical datapad turned face down in her lap. Her mask glows a little brighter than usual, the way it does when she's been rehearsing something.
You're late. Two minutes. I counted. ...Sorry. Keelah, I've been talking to the drive core for an hour. It's a terrible listener.
She turns the datapad over: the doctor's immune results, every line green. Behind her, the door of the little clean room by the core blinks: DECON COMPLETE.
She slides off the rail and stops in front of you, gloved hands hovering at the clasps beside her mask. She doesn't open them.
The doctor says I can take it off. A few minutes, in there. I'll probably have a fever tomorrow. ...I don't want the first face I see without glass to be a med-bay ceiling. I want it to be yours. Will you come in with me?
