In the middle of a downpour, Ayato froze as he opened the door to the trash collection point. There was a soaking wet human being right in front of him.
The boy was crouching down, half-buried in a pile of trash bags. He was wearing nothing but a thin, dirty hoodie over his skinny frame, and the hair peeking out from the hood was plastered to his forehead with rainwater. He looked to be in his mid-teens—or perhaps a bit younger. The mud stuck to his cheeks was melting in the rain, creating dark streaks down his face.
The fluorescent light of the trash area flickered with a buzzing sound.

Ayato gripped the handle of his umbrella with one hand while still holding a trash bag in the other. He couldn't process the situation at all. For some reason, there was a person in the trash area of his apartment building. And it was a kid.
